How to Grow Your Eyelashes Naturally: What You Need to Know

Plus the Best Lash Serums That Work (Based on Customer Reviews Collected)

Have you wanted to pick a dermatologist or beauty editors brain, for a product recommendation from someone who has tried it all.

Unless you are blessed by the eyelash gods by birth, maintaining a full set of long eyelashes can seem like an eternally uphill battle. Sure, you could turn to eyelash extensions or falsies, but this just increases your chances of having actual lashes snap, not to mention the subsequent drying out, which leads to even more breakage.

But you are on to something here; rather than settling for a short-term fix, you want to address the literal root of your issue and find ways to lengthen your lashes, rather than simply pretending to make them longer.

Just like the hair on your head, your eyelashes naturally fall off and replace in cycles every six to 10 weeks, so it is completely normal to lose between one to five lashes each day.

Thinner eyelashes are just another part of the aging process, so if it seems your eyelashes are not as long or full as they used to be, do not fret. Most of the time, a little falling out and thinning is totally normal, and it is nothing to be alarmed by.

That being said, it is possible for your lashes to get brittle and break down from things like improper eye products, new medications, and underlying medical conditions, so make sure you talk with your health care provider if you are experiencing any significant loss in lashes.

In the meantime, you can encourage lash growth with some additional love.

Sure, there are tons of old wives tales floating around the internet (I am looking at you, lemon juice), but remember, this is all about your eyes, so do not be aggressive about your experiments.

Many of these methods are not really effective — and, furthermore, they can hurt your eye region in the process. I am talking about dermatologist-approved techniques that really work, and are best for your eyeline long-term. Here are a few of the best practices.

According to board-certified dermatologist Jannette Graf, M.D., in New York City, your lashes routine should be approached as a combo between your skin and haircare routines.

Just as you would not go to sleep with your hair disheveled in order to prevent breakage, you should brush your lashes once per day in order to untangle the strands and stimulate the hair follicles.

And because you would not dream of moisturizing soiled skin (or, at least, I hope not), always put lash treatments on clean, dry eyes. “Just like you would apply your nighttime skincare routine, so too should your lash routine,” says Dr. Graf.

As I am sure you can tell, there are tons of natural ingredients that are recommended by people for their lashes (see: Castor Oil, Vitamin E, and Coconut Oil). However, the truth is, they just help hydrate and condition your lashes, and do not grow lashes. That does not mean you should not use them – shiny, stronger lashes are always a good thing, right?.

Lash conditioners help to reinforce the hairs and keep them from breaking, ultimately helping in your quest to achieve fuller-looking lashes. Dr. Graf recommends the LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum ($63, amazon.com), which contains a combination of antioxidants, castor oil, and almond extracts that enhance absorption and support healthy hair growth.

As far as lash-growth serums go, these guys have active ingredients that really spur the growth of new hair.

But tread lightly: Latisse was initially used as a treatment for glaucoma, until experts realized that it had quite the side effect of ensuring longer lashes, thanks to its enlarging powers from Bimatoprost. So, if you are looking to really try it, your best option is to get yourself a prescription (which is what you will need for Latisse). When it comes to the over-the-counter eye serums Instagram influencers swear by for giving them longer, fuller lashes, they probably have ingredients that are similar to Bimatoprost, like isopropyl cloprostenate.

But be warned: These are not FDA-regulated or approved, so always do your own research (or, even better, ask a physician or dermatologist before you plaster your entire eye area with this stuff). And avoid using it altogether if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Your eyelashes grow cycle has three stages: callogenesis (dormant stage), telogen (exfoliation stage), and anagen (growth stage). Your lashes spend the majority of their time in the catagen and telogen phases, according to Dr. Graf, so it is natural the growth portion takes some time. In fact, your lashes may take up to three months to naturally grow, even when using proper methods.

Do not be too disappointed if you do not see results immediately: Your lashes may simply take time to reach the correct stage.

And if you are looking for immediate gratification, try resisting the glare of lashes extensions and opt for lash lifting instead.
